Tooth Extractions

Dental extraction is simply the removal of a tooth from the oral cavity. Reasons for the extraction of a tooth can include decay, impacted wisdom teeth, cosmetic purposes and tooth complications such as infection, gum disease and tooth fractures. The extraction of a tooth is a fairly simple and quick procedure although wisdom teeth can be more difficult to remove and as a consequence; more time consuming.

Extractions are generally a safe procedure requiring only local anaesthetic. After a tooth has been pulled blood will usually clot in the socket where the tooth was located. The socket area will most often heal within approximately one week’s time and the gum tissue filling the socket within a month or two.

If you feel you need a tooth extracted it is best to visit Dr. Rogers as it may not be the only solution to resolve a tooth ache, tooth deterioration or disintegration.

Wisdom Tooth Extraction

A wisdom tooth is extracted to prevent complications or to correct a problem. Wisdom teeth problems can include:

  • The jaw is not large enough causing a tooth to become impacted, unable to break through the gum
  • Impacted teeth can cause serious complications such as infection, cysts or damaging bone or other teeth
  • Wisdom teeth that only partially breakthrough the gum can become infected
  • Wisdom teeth not growing at a correct angle causing the tooth to face forward, backward or sideways

Post-procedure

In most cases only a few days will be required to recover from a wisdom tooth extraction. Follow post-procedure instructions from Dr. Rogers. Recovery may be speeded up by following these recommendations:

  • Bite gently on gauze pads periodically, changing the pad frequently to prevent infection
  • Keep your head propped up and don’t lie on your back as this can prolong bleeding
  • Relax. Physical activity can increase the bleeding
  • Avoid hard foods until improvement in the healing process
  • Do not use a straw for the first couple of days as sucking can loosen the blood clot
  • Gently rinsing with salt water (after the first day) can help reduce pain and swelling
  • Avoid smoking
  • Avoid rubbing the area where the tooth has been extracted
  • Contact us if the bleeding continues 24 hours after surgery
